Shalom everyone. Miriam here, 52, from Amsterdam. Dutch Jewish community — my family has been in Amsterdam for several generations and I am deeply connected to the history and the community. But the history of the Dutch Jewish community is also what has made me think increasingly about Israel.
I work as a secondary school history teacher — which in Israel would require both language skills and qualification recognition. I have been researching the Ministry of Education recognition process and it looks like a significant undertaking. My Hebrew is functional — I studied it for years at community school and have visited Israel many times — but teaching-level Hebrew is a different standard.
Jewish by birth, straightforward documentation. Single — my children are grown, both in their twenties, neither making aliyah with me. Making this move alone at 52 is daunting but also freeing in a way I find difficult to explain.
Applying through the Jewish Agency Netherlands. Targeting Jerusalem or Haifa — the pace and character of Tel Aviv is not quite right for me. I want to be somewhere that feels like a real city with depth and history.
Would love to connect with other Dutch olim and with anyone who has navigated teaching qualification recognition in Israel.
