Who Needs to Show Proof of Judaism?
Everyone applying for Aliyah must prove they are:- Born to a Jewish mother OR
- Converted through a recognized Orthodox Beit Din
What Counts as Proof of Judaism?
- If you’re born Jewish:
- Letter from an Orthodox rabbi on synagogue letterhead
- Confirming your mother is Jewish and you were born Jewish
- Must include rabbi’s full name, signature, community, and contact info
- Preferably in English or Hebrew
- If you’re a convert:
- Conversion certificate from an Orthodox Beit Din
- Names of the rabbis
- Date and place of conversion
- Often a second letter is required confirming the Beit Din is recognized by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel
What
- Reform or Conservative conversions (for Aliyah purposes)
- DNA tests
- General synagogue membership
- Personal testimony or family lore
- Non-Orthodox rabbinic letters (unless applying under exceptions)
Helpful Tips:
- Use a rabbi known in your country and recognized by mainstream rabbinical councils
- Get your letter in advance — don’t wait until the interview
- Keep an extra copy and scan everything
- If you’re unsure, consult with a professional or post here for guidance
Common Issues:
- Rabbi is no longer alive
- No synagogue affiliation
- Interfaith or secular upbringing
- Non-Orthodox conversion
- Converted abroad with unclear documentation
