Hi everyone! 👋 If you're planning to make Aliyah (immigrate to Israel under the Law of Return), you’ll be asked to provide proof of your Jewish status — it's one of the most important steps in the process.

This thread covers everything you need to know. Please read through before posting your questions!

✅ Who Needs to Show Proof of Judaism?

Everyone applying for Aliyah must prove they are:

  • Born to a Jewish mother OR
  • Converted through a recognized Orthodox Beit Din
Even if you’ve always identified as Jewish, official documentation is still required.

🕍 What Counts as Proof of Judaism?

  1. If you’re born Jewish:
    • Letter from an Orthodox rabbi on synagogue letterhead
    • Confirming your mother is Jewish and you were born Jewish
    • Must include rabbi’s full name, signature, community, and contact info
    • Preferably in English or Hebrew
  2. If you’re a convert:
    • Conversion certificate from an Orthodox Beit Din
    • Names of the rabbis
    • Date and place of conversion
    • Often a second letter is required confirming the Beit Din is recognized by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel

❌ What

  • Reform or Conservative conversions (for Aliyah purposes)
  • DNA tests
  • General synagogue membership
  • Personal testimony or family lore
  • Non-Orthodox rabbinic letters (unless applying under exceptions)

📎 Helpful Tips:

  • Use a rabbi known in your country and recognized by mainstream rabbinical councils
  • Get your letter in advance — don’t wait until the interview
  • Keep an extra copy and scan everything
  • If you’re unsure, consult with a professional or post here for guidance

⚠️ Common Issues:

  • Rabbi is no longer alive
  • No synagogue affiliation
  • Interfaith or secular upbringing
  • Non-Orthodox conversion
  • Converted abroad with unclear documentation
If you're in this situation, don’t panic — there are ways forward. We recommend reaching out to professionals who specialize in these cases.
