Bonjour and Shalom. Yael here, 27, from Montreal. French-Canadian Jewish family — my grandparents came from Morocco in the 1960s and my parents were born in Montreal. I grew up in a warm Sephardic household, very connected to Jewish identity and to Israel.
I applied through NBN Canada and my caseworker has been excellent. Documents from Quebec were slightly complicated — the apostille process through MRIF is relatively new given Canada's recent Hague accession and there was some initial confusion about the correct procedure. Sorted now and my file is complete.
I want to move to Jerusalem — specifically the French Hill or Pisgat Ze'ev area where there is a significant French-speaking and Moroccan Jewish community. My Hebrew is good — I studied it from childhood and have spent two summers in Israel on study programmes. My challenge is the professional side — I work in social work and I am not sure how accessible that field is for a new oleh without perfect Hebrew.
Looking forward to connecting with other Francophone olim and anyone who has worked in social services in Israel.
