Hi everyone. Michael here, 44, from Sea Point, Cape Town. South African Jewish community born and bred — King David schools, Herzlia, the lot. My father made aliyah briefly in the 1980s before coming back and I always felt the pull. Recent years in South Africa have accelerated my thinking considerably.
Divorced, two teenagers — 15 and 17 — who are both tentatively on board though the 17 year old is more ambivalent than I would like. They are South African to their core and the social upheaval is real. I am trying to time the aliyah around the 17 year old's matric so he finishes his South African schooling first.
Working through JAFI SA in Johannesburg. The unabridged birth certificates took six weeks from Home Affairs which I had been warned about. Documents are now with the Jewish Agency and I am waiting for my interview date.
Ra'anana is the target — the SA community there is significant and I know several families already settled there. Would love to hear from SA olim specifically about the first year experience.
